A Sneak Peek of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0

Microsoft revealed quite a bit of exciting information at their PDC2008 Professional Developers Conference this year. Sprinkled in with the first real Windows 7 information and all the talk about the Azure Services Platform (Microsoft's take on cloud computing), was some interesting information on the upcoming Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0.

The best part of all this news is that it isn't just talk. Microsoft has actually provided a Community Technology Preview so that you can start playing with the next version of their development platform today!

Microsoft Pre-release Software Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 Community Technology Preview

"Microsoft Pre-release Software Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 Community Technology Preview" That's its official name as listed on the download page. I'll be using "VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 CTP" to save some typing.

Note: Let me take this opportunity to remind you that the software we're looking at here is a very early build of products which are most likely not going to ship until over a year from now. This is pre-Beta code and almost certainly has some bugs. Please bear that in mind and don't use these tools on any projects or data of which you don't have at least one backup.

Microsoft provides the CTP as a Virtual PC image for use with Microsoft Virtual PC. The file comes compressed and split into 11 parts. The full download is over 7 GB so be sure you've got a fast connection and some time on your hands before you start. You can find the download and installation instructions here: Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 CTP.

Note: If you don't already have a copy of Microsoft Virtual PC, you'll need to download and install Virtual PC 2007 Service Pack 1 or later. It's a free download and a great tool to have even if you're not interested in downloading the 7 GB needed to test drive VS 2010.

Once you download and decompress the image simply follow the instructions on the download page to log into the virtual machine.

Once you've logged in you'll find yourself in a version of Windows Server 2008 configured with all the goodies. Here are a few screen caps of VS 2010:

A configuration screen from IIS showing that we're actually able to select and run on the .NET Framework 4.0.

I didn't have much time to play around, but did notice that they've taken snippets to a whole new level this time around and I can't wait!

    Don't Miss the Walkthroughs

The one other thing I do want to mention before I turn you loose to start downloading is that you'll be doing yourself a real disservice if you don't check out the walkthroughs that Microsoft has included. You find them in a folder in the center of the virtual machine's desktop. They're probably the quickest and easiest way for you to get a grasp on the new features included in this version of the platform.
